Our Story - Lucia Hope
Our Story
Lucia Mother Earth (DBA: Lucia Hope) was born from a simple yet powerful vision: to create a sanctuary where women, children, and families can rebuild their lives in safety, surrounded by nature, creativity, and a supportive community. What began as a refuge for survivors of domestic violence has grown into a holistic model of healing and empowerment that addresses the urgent needs of homelessness, food insecurity, unemployment, and generational trauma.
Our founder, Rodnina Hallgren, drew on years of nonprofit leadership, social enterprise, and creative direction to design a place that nurtures the whole person, mind, body, and spirit. At Lucia Hope, families are not just given shelter; they are offered education, workforce pathways, food security, and wraparound services that cultivate resilience and independence.
Every pathway, garden, and program is intentionally designed to restore dignity, spark creativity, and plant the seeds of lasting generational change. From trauma‑informed housing pods to Montessori‑inspired classrooms, from community kitchens to workforce hubs, Lucia Hope is building an 81‑acre sanctuary where healing takes root and futures are reimagined.

About Lucia Hope
Lucia Hope – The Meaning Behind the Name
Lucia Hope empowers women, children, and families with healing, housing, and community to build lasting legacies of transformation.

The name Lucia carries both personal and historical significance. In Italian, Lucia means “light,” and that symbolism is central to our mission, illuminating pathways out of hardship and into hope. Historically, Saint Lucia of Syracuse, in Sicily, was a young woman of the early 4th century remembered for her courage, compassion, and devotion to serving the vulnerable. She became revered as a bearer of light, both literally and spiritually, and her legacy continues to inspire communities across the world. In Sweden, St. Lucia Day is celebrated each December, honoring her philanthropy and the light she brought to those in need.
For us, Lucia represents the light of dignity, creativity, and opportunity that we strive to bring into the lives of women, children, and families. It is a reminder that even in the darkest times, light can guide the way forward.

Lucia Hope is more than a nonprofit, it is a living vision for healing, empowerment, and generational stewardship. Founded with the belief that every person carries an innate light, we create spaces where that light can be nurtured, protected, and shared. Rooted in Southern California yet reaching far beyond, our work bridges housing and safe haven, education and skills training, arts and wellness, sustainable farming and food sovereignty, and animal‑assisted trauma recovery.

Each program is designed to meet urgent needs while planting seeds for long‑term transformation, blending practical support with spiritual and emotional restoration. From reclaiming land for regenerative agriculture to mentoring youth in leadership and self‑expression, every initiative is an act of legacy‑building.
Lucia Hope is not just a place, it is a movement of light‑bearers, vision‑keepers, and bridge‑builders, working together to heal, empower, and transform the world, one life at a time Lucia Hope unites housing, healing, education, and empowerment to transform lives, restore dignity, and build resilient communities of hope.
